When working on a project, there are many common ways that we get distracted, lose productivity, or otherwise slow ourselves down. Here are a few of the most common ways to lose productivity, and the best ways to avoid them.

Understand technology

Technology is an incredibly potent and powerful tool. However, tools can be powerful, and if we are not careful, can hinder rather than help us. Having a good understanding of technology allows us to control it, rather than the other way around. The best way to do this is to ensure that we separate our enjoyment and distractions from the work environment. If we have to work on a computer, try to make sure that that computer is only used for work activities. We train our brains to expect things, and if we are used to relaxing at a computer, it will be difficult to transition into using it as an effective workstation. Setting clear guidelines for our work space vs our personal space allows us to be more productive while also appreciating our free time more fully. If we are working on a report or form, setting our devices such as cell phones to silent can help us to work uninterrupted. The rest of the things in our life will be there when we finish, and we will be much better able to complete tasks.

Ensure that you stay Healthy

Staying healthy, both mentally and physically, will have a powerful effect on our ability to stay productive. When we are physically taking care of ourselves, our minds will be affected. Our brains really are just another part of our body, and if we neglect one part, the others will suffer. Studies show that when we are in better shape we are more optimistic, can stay focused longer, and will be able to better deal with the challenges that we face. Additionally, making sure that you get enough sleep will help you to stay focused and alert no matter the situation. Our mental state is important, and training ourselves to stay focused and to stay on task will make it much easier for us to achieve our goals. One of the simplest things that we can do to increase our productivity is to take personal time and ensure that we are happy and getting the things that we need out of life. If you are ever in a spot where you were consistently unsatisfied, you or those around you may have noticed a drop in your productivity.
